The Joseph Nathaniel France (JNF) General Hospital has unveiled a vibrant ‘baby friendly’ mural at its maternity ward, celebrating its commitment to mothers, babies and breastfeeding.
The mural highlights the hospital’s Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative certification, awarded by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) in October 2022. Nurse Manager and BFHI Coordinator, Naomi Brownbill, explained that the hospital implemented all ten steps for successful breastfeeding and has been practicing baby friendly care even before certification.
Hospital Director, Dr. Jenson Morton, emphasized that while the new hospital building is still in development, JNF is already working to meet international standards across all services.
Local artist Darren Moses, a visual arts teacher at Charles E. Mills Secondary School, completed the mural in just two days. Staff and Ministry of Health officials, including Senior Staff Nurse Natasha Williams and Permanent Secretary Curtis Martin, joined in providing guidance and moral support during the project.
Dr. Morton says the mural is more than decoration, it’s a reminder of JNF’s unwavering support for mothers and children.
Artist and parent, Darren Moses, praised the hospital’s baby friendly practices, noting everything from strict hygiene protocols to encouraging fathers to be present during births.
The mural now stands as a colorful symbol of JNF General Hospital’s dedication to maternal and infant health, inspiring both staff and patients alike.
