Justice Ministry Leads Bold Step toward Prison Reform and Human Rights

In a strong move to modernize prison practices and uphold human dignity, the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, alongside the CARICOM Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), hosted a dynamic two-day Workshop from July 22nd to 23rd, 2025.

The workshop was held under the title of: “International Standards and Best Practices on Human Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty”.

The training grounded in the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules), empowered prison officers from St. Kitts and Nevis with tools to prevent mistreatment, ensure humane detention conditions such as healthcare, sanitation, and adequate accommodation. Additionally, training was done in the area of supporting vulnerable detainees such as youths, elderly persons, women, and individuals with disabilities also to strengthen rehabilitation efforts.

On July 21st, officials toured His Majesty’s Prison in St. Kitts and the Prison Farm on Nevis, gaining real-world insights to guide future reforms.

This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to justice that is not only firm but fair, compassionate and human rights – driven.
