‘King Ellie Matt’ to receive an Official Funeral on June 11th

Mr. Elston ‘King Ellie Matt’ Nero, MH, CSM, will be accorded an Official Funeral, a press release from the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis (or the federal Government) says.

 

The announcement confirms that Mr. Nero alias “Maestro” will be laid to rest following a public ceremony on Thursday June 11th 2026.

 

The Official Funeral, a formal state-assisted public event typically reserved for individuals of profound national importance or who have made significant contributions to the nation, will allow citizens from all walks of life to pay their final respects to a true son of the soil. Mr. Nero passed away on April 26th 2026, at the age of 73.

 

The funeral service will be held at the Newtown Playing Field. Opening tributes will commence at 12 noon, with the main service scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.

 

As a revered singer, songwriter, arranger, and bandleader, King Ellie Matt was founder of the legendary ‘Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass’, a ten-time National Calypso King and a seven-time Road March winner.

 

One of his most notable songs is: “I Love St. Kitts – Viva St. Kitts,” which remains as an anthem of national pride.
