Labour Minister: “Safety… is your conviction in doing the right things right”

“Safety is in one’s mind. It is your conviction in doing the right things right.”

Those were the words from local Minister of Labour et.al in the Nevis Island Administration, Hon. Spencer Brand in commemoration of “World Day for Safety and Health at Work” 2022.

Celebrated on April 28th, the observance, according to un.org promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

Minister Brand in his address also stated that “As a government, we will have to continue to provide the necessary resources to increase awareness of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), expand the knowledge of hazards and risks and understanding how to control and prevent them. Furthermore, we must develop at the work force level, a strong OSH culture by all the stakeholders in the workplace: employers, managers, workers and customers or clients….”

He went on to explain that “OSH control and management in our workplaces, work sphere and elsewhere inevitably means changing human behaviour to develop deep interest and desire to embrace safety in everything we do.”

In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO) began to observe World Day for Safety and Health at Work in order to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work, capitalizing on the ILO’s traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue.
