The latest episode of ‘In Focus’ highlighted essential consumer protection and regulatory efforts in St. Kitts and Nevis. Featured guests were Director in the Department of Consumer Affairs St. Kitts, Paul Queeley, and Director of St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards, Stuart Laplace, the discussion underscored the importance of quality, labeling, and fair trade practices to keep the public safe.

A major highlight was the implementation of a new fixed penalty ticketing system, designed to improve business compliance. This system allows authorities to issue immediate fines for violations, such as: selling expired products ($1,000 fine), improper labeling or lack of trade descriptions ($750 fine), making false or misleading representations ($1,500 fine), failure to display accurate prices or engaging in dual pricing, ($750 fine). According to Queeley, where dual pricing takes place, the consumer pays the lesser price.

Offenders have 14 business days to clear tickets at the Magistrate Court. This proactive enforcement aims to elevate business standards and protect consumers, rather than simply penalizing owners, ensuring a level playing field across the marketplace.

Furthermore, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) requires all goods, including pre-packaged and repackaged foods, to meet labelling standards. Labels must clearly provide ingredient and allergen information to protect consumers and ensure product quality.  This also includes locally manufactured products. All businesses, including vendors, were required to comply by December 31st, 2025.
