Manager of the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority provides update on September 2nd Landfill Fire

“We’re still awaiting a report on the matter from the Nevis Fire Department. That matter is still being worked on. I don’t know if the investigations are complete, but we’re still waiting on an update from the Fire department”

So says General Manager of the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Mr. Andrew Hendrickson.

Mr. Hendrickson was providing an update on a fire incident that occurred at the Land fill in Long Point, here on Nevis.

The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020. Mr. Hendrickson also reported that the fire took place in the tyre storage area in the east section of the landfill.

The Nevis Fire Department responded to the fire and at the time, managed to keep the fire in a contained area so as to control any potential spread.

The blaze resulted in smoldering conditions in the days after, forcing a temporary closure of the land fill.

Mr. Hendrickson, at the time of the incident, was resolute that no employee was responsible for the fire.
