Ministry Of Social Development Clarifies Child Protection Procedures
Ministry Of Social Development Clarifies Child Protection Procedures
The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs-St. Kitts has responded to concerns raised on social media about the Department of Probation and Child Protection Services. The Ministry expressed regret for any distress caused and reassured the public that its officers are trained to protect the welfare of children across the Federation.
The Department is staffed by qualified professionals and guided by clear operational procedures for handling reports of child abuse and neglect. Reports may be made anonymously by the public or through mandatory reporters such as teachers, guidance counsellors, doctors, police officers and social workers.
The Ministry emphasized that by law, Child Protection Officers may, in certain cases, speak to a child without a parent present if abuse or neglect is suspected. Their role is to safeguard children, not to bring legal charges, but to ensure safety through protective measure such as foster care or institutional placement when necessary.
The Ministry is reminding the public that protecting children is a shared responsibility and is encouraging individuals to report suspected abuse. A 24-hour Child Abuse Hotline is available at 662-6833 and those interested in providing foster care can contact 467-1398 or 1311.
The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that in every case, the best interest of the child takes precedence.
