The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the St. Kitts Meteorological Services conducted a national hurricane drill, simulating the approach of a powerful storm: Hurricane Sophia.
In this exercise scenario, Sophia was a Category 4 hurricane, located 182 miles east-southeast of the Federation, with sustained winds of 150 mph, expected to strengthen to Category 5.
The event formed part of the Prime Minister’s Annual Simulation Exercise from July 16th to the 18th. According to a statement by the Ministry of Communications et.al, it was anticipated that both the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) would activate the Emergency Operations Center during July 17th and 18th.
The activities included: a Pre-Strike Meeting with Stakeholders on Wednesday, an Emergency Operations Centers Activation on Thursday and Friday.
