The entire month of April is celebrated as Volcano Awareness Month as part of a Multiple-Hazard Campaign, so says the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD).
Volcanoes are commonly found in areas where tectonic plates meet.
The Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis, lies near the Caribbean Plate boundary, making volcanic activity a potential hazard for the region.
The NDMD’s facebook page stated that “Awareness and preparation are essential to protect our community and reduce the impact of volcanic hazards.”
The department is also inviting the general public to stay alert for volcano facts, safety tips, and preparedness information all month long via its social media platforms.
