NEMA urges disaster preparedness following 7.6 quake in the Cayman Islands
NEMA urges disaster preparedness following 7.6 quake in the Cayman Islands
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) SKN is using the recent tsunami alert issued for territories in the Caribbean region, as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of disaster preparedness for residents and citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.
It comes following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on Saturday Feb. 8th, occurring north of Honduras, which triggered a tsunami alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC). Initially, several Caribbean nations were identified as potentially facing hazardous tsunami waves. However, NEMA said in a press release “while the threat was later downgraded and ultimately cancelled, the event serves as a crucial reminder that natural disasters can occur unexpectedly, even in our region.”
NEMA emphasized that being prepared is vital for safeguarding lives and property. Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to enhance their disaster readiness: Stay Informed, know how to receive alerts in your area, develop a Family Emergency Plan, prepare an Emergency Supply Kit, know your surroundings and practice drills.
“This recent event, while we are thankful it did not result in a tsunami impacting the shores of any territory, underscores the reality that we live in a region where various natural hazards are possible,” stated NEMA’s National Disaster Coordinator, Livingston Pemberton. Individuals can also join NEMA’s Broadcast list by sending a message to (869) 466-5100 which is also used as a WhatsApp number.
