It is now 25 days into the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) continues its ongoing efforts to ensure the island remained fully prepared for any potential hazardous events.
On June 22nd, 2026, the Nevis Disaster Management Department took part in a nationwide hurricane preparedness exercise simulating the approach of Hurricane Barry. Pre-strike meetings were held across the Federation via Zoom, followed by the activation of the National Emergency Operations Centre. Officials coordinated response plans as Hurricane Barry was simulated as a rapidly intensifying Category 4 storm posing severe wind, rainfall, and storm surge threats.
The drill tested communication, coordination, and readiness across agencies to strengthen disaster response capabilities.
Further, residents should take proactive steps to be prepared this hurricane season to ensure their safety and preparedness. This includes having a clear family emergency plan, identifying nearby shelters, and assembling an emergency supply kit with essential items such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries.
