New Disability Policy to Target Accessible Housing and Home Ownership

The Federal Government’s newly announced National Disability Policy is placing renewed focus on housing access and inclusion for persons living with disabilities across the Federation.

 

Among the policy’s ten imperatives is “Inclusive Housing and Livable Communities,” which proposes a quota system for public housing and grant programmes to retrofit homes for accessibility. Officials say the initiative is intended to ensure persons with disabilities are not excluded from home ownership or suitable living conditions.

 

During a media appearance, Minister for Disabilities,et al., Hon. Isalean Phillip acknowledged that the federation lacks a formal social housing policy but said the disability policy could help guide future housing strategies through improved data collection and advocacy.
