The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) issued a public notice outlining strict regulations under the Smoking (Designated Areas) Act, 2023 and the Freedom of Conscience (Cannabis) Act, 2023, reinforcing a nationwide ban on smoking and vaping in public places.
Under the legislation, smoking and vaping, including the use of electronic cigarettes, are prohibited in all public spaces unless conducted within a licensed designated smoking area approved by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Public places are broadly defined to include any indoor or outdoor area accessible to the public, whether publicly or privately owned.
The ban applies to locations such as bars, restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, churches, government offices, public transportation, community centres, roads, and commercial or agricultural properties, among others.
Smoking, including cannabis use, is permitted only in clearly marked designated smoking areas that are officially licensed. Areas without proper signage are deemed smoke-free.
Individuals found smoking in prohibited areas face a fixed penalty of $500, with additional sanctions possible for businesses that allow unlawful smoking.
Officials say the measures aim to balance personal choice with the broader responsibility to protect public health and ensure a safe environment for all citizens.
