Nevis’ Premier Mark Brantley, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis, issued a statement on the recent homicides over the weekend.

He said “I believe that the time has come for the Government to accept that it cannot fight crime alone. The police and security forces, no matter how well equipped or well intentioned, must have the full support of the community if we are to prevail against this scourge of crime and violence.”

Mr. Brantley stated “St. Kitts and Nevis needs all hands on deck.” He added “crime is not a governmental problem. Crime is a societal problem. To tackle it, we need less politics and more policy; less rancour and more cooperation; less talk and more action.”

Alex Harris of Challengers Village, St. Kitts, 33, was gunned down and found by lawmen sitting motionless in a chair on Saturday night Apr. 6th (between 11:30pm and 12am Sunday) at the Basseterre Bus and Ferry Terminal.

The second incident occurred at a bar on Main Street in Parson’s Village, St. Kitts, between 1:30AM and 2:30AM on April 7th. According to the police, Rashiel James, 37, of Middle Island, St. Kitts, was gunned down, laying motionless on the ground.

Leshawn Hazel, 30, of Main Street, Dieppe Bay, St. Kitts, was struck in one of his legs and was transported via ambulance to the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineaux, and then to the JNF General Hospital in Basseterre where he was subsequently warded. SKN’s murder toll now stands at 8 for this year
