In celebration of World Steelpan Day, three-time Culturama Panorama Champions, Oualie Rhythmz Steel Orchestra on Nevis held a musical display in the heart of Charlestown on Tuesday, August 11th, 2026.

Dubbed “Pan in De Square”, the event was held in the Memorial Square from 4:30 p.m.

According to the pan group, “the town came alive with the exhilarating sounds of sweet steelpan music as the orchestra joined the global celebration of this remarkable instrument”.

In July 2023, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed August 11th as World Steelpan Day. The annual observance recognizes the unique cultural and historical significance of the steelpan, the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the twentieth century.

The steelpan has evolved into an internationally acclaimed instrument and an enduring symbol of Caribbean creativity, resilience, and innovation. The United Nations declaration not only celebrates the steelpan’s rich heritage but also acknowledges its role in promoting inclusive societies, sustainable communities, and the creative economy.

The orchestra is under the musical direction of Mr. Leroy Parris Jr. and is managed by Dr. Judy Nisbett.
