The People’s Action Movement (PAM) has expressed it “is deeply alarmed by the attempt to minimize what has been revealed about the unauthorized access to the Electoral Office’s computer systems.”
The Office of the Supervisor of Elections confirmed that a person or persons were accessing the computer systems of the Electoral Office located on Central Street, Basseterre, by remote online means without authorization. Preliminary investigations suggest the breach has been occurring over the last few months.
PAM said “it is a direct violation of the department responsible for protecting the most critical instrument of democracy, the Voters’ List.” Upon discovery, the Information Technology Department was immediately engaged and has since discontinued and disabled the unauthorized remote access.
According to the political party, “the public is asked to trust that claim without an independent audit, a forensic review, or a clear account of what really happened.” PAM noted that it “is not pointing fingers; we are demanding accountability.” The Supervisor of Elections, Oaklyn Peets, launched an investigation and contacted the White-Collar Crime Unit of the Royal Saint Christopher and Nevis Police Force for assistance.
This incident took place before the annual Register of Voters was posted in each polling division on Friday, January 30th.
