The latest edition of “Health Talk”, featured representatives of the Renal Society, Registered Dietician and Nutrition Officer of the Nevis Health Promotion Unit, Ms. Jenesia Pemberton, and Dr. Glenville E. Liburd.
The pair discussed that individuals with kidney disease, should be mindful of the amounts of potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and protein that are in the foods they consume, especially during the holiday festivities.
Excessive amounts of these nutrients can cause complex side effects, some leading to death, especially for individuals with risk factors, such as diabetes and hypertension. Safe amounts of each nutrient to consume, would vary for individuals, based on risk factors, and the progression of their kidney disease.
Ms. Pemberton stated the best course of action is to meet with your doctor and also a registered dietician to make an appropriate meal plan. She gave other tips including: to maintain a healthy weight, controlling risk factors such as your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, doing non-strenuous physical activity, taking medications as prescribed and monitoring your fluid levels.
