Prime Minister Drew Leads CARICOM Delegation to Suriname for Santokhi Funeral

Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Chair of the Caribbean Community, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew led a CARICOM delegation to the Republic of Suriname on April 7th, 2026, to attend the funeral of former President of Suriname Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi.

 

Santokhi, who passed away at the age of 67 following a medical emergency at his home on March 30th, served Suriname with distinction and held the office of the nation’s ninth president.

 

Prime Minister Drew’s presence at the solemn occasion underscores the strong bonds of solidarity within CARICOM, as regional leaders unite to pay their respects to a distinguished statesman.

 

Meantime – Following official engagements in Suriname, Prime Minister the Hon. Dr Drew is set to be in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana for high-level bilateral meetings with President Irfaan Ali.

 

During the visit, both leaders are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) designed to strengthen cooperation between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Guyana. The agreements are to provide a structured framework for collaboration across multiple areas of national and regional development.

 

A central focus will be food security, with both nations seeking to enhance agricultural output, reduce dependence on imports, and build resilience against global supply chain challenges.
