Prime Minister issues Statement on Tragic Death of Janelika Romney

Following the discovery of the body of 15 year old Janelika Romney, nation leaders took to social media to address the matter.

Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr Terrance Drew, expressed condolences to the parents, family, and friends of Janelika, stating she was a “child, innocent, full of promise, and undeserving of such a tragic fate.”

He thanked Police Commissioner, James Sutton, member of the police and defence force, international partners and the community for their effort in addressing the matter and expressed that justice will be pursued with the “full weight of the law”.

Drew ended by saying “May Janelika’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory forever strengthen our resolve to protect all our children.

Meanwhile, also addressing the matter with similar sentiments and statements, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Mark Brantley, underscored that it is a “sober reminder of our collective need as a society to do more to protect our boys and girls.”

He continued: “We cannot talk about building a sustainable island State without ensuring that the necessary guard rails and safety nets are in place for our people and more specifically our youth. Our people must now and forever more be at the epicenter of our development.”

As a parent himself, Brantley encouraged the nation to “bind ourselves together and ensure that tragedies like this never occur again” and ended may it be the “last of its kind in our beloved Federation”.

The confirmation of Janelika’s death was made on Friday June 27th. It followed the formal arrest of Selwyn Pringle on Thursday June 26th, who was charged for the offences: Kidnapping and False Imprisonment, in connection with the 15 year old’s disappearance. Lawmen also confirmed that he is the Godfather of Romney.
