Prison Reform Symposium held at St. Kitts Marriott Resort 

A Symposium on Prison Reform was held on Tuesday, July 5th and Wednesday, July 6th, 2022 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort featuring regional and local representatives of correctional facilities and legal advisors.

 

The symposium was declared open on Tuesday by St. Kitts and Nevis’ Governor General, Sir S. W. Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, QC, JP, LL.D.

 

The aim of the symposium was to discuss Reports on Prison Conditions and Propose Reform by Commissioners and Directors of Correction Facilities from around the region.

 

The symposium was organized by the Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) project which, according to caribbeanimpact.org “is an eight-year regional civil society justice sector reform project funded by the Government of Canada. It is being implemented from within the Caribbean Law Institute Centre, Faculty of Law, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus since 2014.” 

 

Presenters at the symposium included Regional Project Director – Professor Velma Newton CBE, CSM; Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice – Justice Jacob Wit; Director of Public Prosecutions of Jamaica – Ms. Paula Llewellyn CD, QC and various Commissioners and Directors of Prisons from Grenada, Jamaica, Monserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. 

 

IMPACT Justice aims “to strengthen legal frameworks, improve legal professionalism and the sharing of legal information, and to facilitate increased knowledge and use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in CARICOM Member States.”
