On Valentine’s Day (February 14th), the Nevis Health Promotion Unit (HPU) will be offering free Rapid HIV Testing. Persons can visit the unit on Jews Street, Charlestown, between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, and targets white blood cells, according to the World Health Organization.
Coordinator at the HPU, Nadine Carty, informed the VON Newsline of the Rapid HIV Testing process. It takes approximately 20 minutes, where blood is screened for the antibodies of the HIV virus. The blood is obtained through a finger prick, and applied to a test strip. During the wait, individuals would be counselled before they are given their results.
Carty emphasized the importance of getting tested, such as: knowing your HIV status, obtaining care, and counselling on how to treat the disease if positive, and learning about preventative measures to maintain a negative HIV status. Other reasons are protecting yourself and others from exposure or infection, especially pregnant women to prevent passing on the virus to their child.
Additionally, commencing next week, the Nevis Health Promotion Unit will offer free rapid HIV testing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Although walk-ins are accepted, persons are strongly encouraged to arrange appointments by calling 469-8010.
