Rehabilitative construction has officially begun at the Cardin Home in Basseterre, St. Kitts, as the Federal Ministry of Health advances a major modernization programme aimed at transforming the facility ahead of its 100th anniversary in May 2027.

Managed by the Public Works Department, with labour provided by His Majesty’s Prison, the project includes extensive upgrades to resident housing units, including new roofing, plumbing, electrical systems, flooring, windows, walls, and carpentry. Renovations will also enhance the kitchen, laundry, dining and recreation areas, physical therapy space, and sick bay, while the property will receive new perimeter fencing, upgraded security features, and modern furnishings throughout.

The Ministry credited the Public Works Department, His Majesty’s Prison, T.D.C. Building Supplies, and private donors, including Men in Aprons, for supporting the initiative.

The latest works build on recent improvements at the Home, including the completion of the refurbished Mental Health Wing, the introduction of physiotherapy and nutrition services in 2023, and expanded recreational programming led by dedicated activities coordinators.

The Ministry said the project is intended to bring the Cardin Home up to international standards, ensuring senior citizens and indigent residents can live in greater comfort and dignity.
