Saint Kitts and Nevis Leads Regional Push for Human Rights and Torture Prevention
Saint Kitts and Nevis Leads Regional Push for Human Rights and Torture Prevention
The Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with international and regional partners, is hosting a week of activities focused on human rights and torture prevention. The initiative is supported by the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Caribbean Regional Office, and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
A two-day regional workshop held from 8–9 September brought together senior government officials from Dominica, Saint Lucia, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Participants are examining the UN human rights system, treaty obligations under the UN Convention against Torture (UNCAT), and mechanisms for implementation and reporting.
Attorney General Garth Wilkin emphasized regional cooperation, saying: “By pooling expertise, strengthening peer-to-peer networks, and amplifying our regional voice, we can collectively address common challenges and reinforce the rule of law across the Eastern Caribbean.”
The programme continues with police training on 11–12 September, focusing on investigative interviewing and appropriate use of force. The sessions aim to enhance professionalism and accountability in law enforcement, aligning with Saint Kitts and Nevis’ broader justice reform efforts.
