SKN Bar Association issued statement regarding serious charges brought against Attorneys at law in federation

President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, Kurlyn D. V. Merchant has issued a statement pertaining to the recent arrests against several attorneys in the federation.

The release stated “while these allegations are serious, it is essential to emphasize that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The legal process must be allowed to unfold, and we trust that the judicial system will handle these charges with the utmost fairness and efficiency”.

“We urge the public to respect the principle of due process and to remember that every individual is entitled to a fair trial. While public discourse is a natural part of such events, we encourage responsible commentary that does not compromise ongoing investigations, influence potential juries, or unjustly damage reputations”.

Ms. Merchant continued by saying “no individual is above the law, and encourages the public to continue trusting the legal process and the justice system, allowing the courts to fulfill their role in a fair and impartial manner…

…Attorneys occupy a unique and significant role in public life, with special responsibilities as officers of the court. Attorneys are expected to adhere to the Code of Ethics, uphold their integrity and preserve the dignity of the legal profession, avoiding any conduct that could undermine its standing”.
