SKN Health Ministry monitors hMPV and other cases of respiratory tract illnesses

An outbreak of a new virus has surfaced in China. The virus – Human Metapneumo Virus (hMPV) is said to be a virus that can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are the most at risk of serious illness from the virus.

Here in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry of Health has issued a press release on the current matter.  According to the release, it states that base on the latest updates from the World Health Organization, surveillance data from China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) indicates that the intensity of infectious respiratory cases is lower than the same period last year. However, an increase in acute respiratory infections, including seasonal influenza, hMPV, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and others, have been noted, particularly in the northern provinces of China.

The ministry is assuring the public that they are constantly monitoring cases of respiratory tract illnesses via their well-maintained robust surveillance system.

The public is also encouraged to maintain standard health practices during the current flu season, which include: washing hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizers, avoiding close contact with individuals showing signs of respiratory illness, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, disposing of tissues properly, decontaminate high touch surfaces frequently and staying home if unwell (seek medical care when symptoms persist).
