SKN Honors Mandela’s Legacy at United Nations Ceremony
St. Kitts and Nevis joined the international community in commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day at the United Nations General Assembly on July 18th.
Representing the Federation was Her Excellency – Dr. Mutryce Williams, who participated in the 2025 Nelson Mandela Prize ceremony, held under the theme: “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality.”
Governor General Dame Marcella Liburd was commended for her role as one of five Eminent Personalities advising on the selection of Nobel-level laureates who reflect Mandela’s values.
UN General Assembly President – Philemon Yang and Secretary-General – António Guterres highlighted Mandela’s legacy of justice, reconciliation, and peace. South Africa’s Naledi Pandor encouraged action in the spirit of “good trouble,” honoring Mandela’s Xhosa name, Rolihlahla.
The 2025 UN Nelson Mandela Prize was awarded to Brenda Reynolds of Canada and Kennedy Odede of Kenya for their work in advancing peace and fighting poverty.
