“I Am and I Will” was the theme for World Cancer Day 2020, which was observed on Tuesday, February 4th, 2020.

World Cancer Day, which is observed annually on February 4th, is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

It is an opportunity to rally with the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from Cancer.

Minister of State with responsibility for Health, the Hon. Wendy Phipps, in a statement, noted that in the year 2019 alone, there were some 63 cases of Cancer diagnosed between January and November, with the leading types of such cancers being Breast Cancer in St. Kitts (15.3%) and Prostate Cancer in Nevis (11.5%).

In keeping with the observance of World Cancer Day, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Hazel Laws, pointed out that every citizen and resident of St. Kitts and Nevis, must take into account the small population, and noted that despite this, every effort must be made to combat Cancer.

She added that everyone “must continue to aggressively prevent the disease wherever we can, through healthy dietary and lifestyle changes.”
