St. Kitts and Nevis joined the world in celebrating Caribbean Nutrition Day which is celebrated annually on June 1st.

Caribbean Nutrition Day serves as a reminder that good nutrition is essential to overall health and well-being. Across the region, countries continue to face increasing rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Many of these conditions can be prevented or managed through healthier lifestyle choices, including balanced nutrition and regular exercise.

Here on Nevis, the Health Promotion Unit (HPU) in Collaboration with Horsfords IGA Valumart presented customers with delicious fruit smoothies, in promoting a healthier lifestyle on Friday June 5th at the Valumart Parking-lot in Stoney Grove.

On its facebook page, the HPU shared that this year’s theme focused on the importance of using fresh foods to prepare meals, as processed foods are a danger to our health.

Also, persons were asked to join the conversation as members of the public were invited to share their thoughts after sampling their fruit smoothies. According to the HPU, the responses were inspiring and a reminder that good nutrition is one of the foundations of good health.

The theme for this year is: “Healthy Eating. Active Living: Promoting Caribbean Foods as Medicine.”
