SKN secures funding to preserve its cultural expressions

In a significant effort to preserve the cultural expressions of Saint Kitts and Nevis such as masquerades, clowns, and other traditional performances and showcases, the federation has secured USD $9,926 from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO.

This has been accomplished through a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and the St. Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO.

The money will be used to create a nomination dossier for the “Masquerade Traditions of St. Kitts and Nevis” to be placed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This list comprises of cultural expressions which communities and United Nations States “consider require urgent measures to keep them alive.”

The development follows the completion of St. kits and Nevis’ National Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Policy, which had over USD $92 000 in funding from UNESCO, to preserve and promote the federation’s folklore traditions.
