SKN Submits Bid to Join International Leadership of the United Nations
The Permanent Mission of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations has declared its intention to be a candidate in the election of new leadership, to one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN).
That organ is the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), founded in 1945, which oversees “a complex ecosystem” of secondary bodies coordinating economic, social, civil, humanitarian and sustainable actions to achieve international goals. The election of new leadership to ECOSOC will take place in New York on June 4th 2025.
The document informing the UN of SKN’s bid spotlighted the federations Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA). It reads: “This visionary project injects impetus into our national drive to attain the Sustainable Development Goals and future-proof our society and economy. Its success is dependent on an enabling international environment and partnerships that respect ambition.”
It continued: “Our candidature is therefore built on the theme “Sustainability, Resilience, Security,” and we look forward to working at the United Nations with a sense of urgency, and as a voice of consensus and partnership on the Economic and Social Council.”
Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E, Dr. Mutryce Williams, solicited the support of diplomatic and development partners. She stated: “St. Kitts and Nevis intends to be an ally to the most vulnerable,” with climate action, biodiversity loss, environmental justice and economic equity being at core of the campaign – issues that are critical to every Kittitian and Nevisian as we head into another hurricane season with worsening storms.”
