That’s Prime Minister and Cuban alumnus, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew. His were comments were made on Tuesday Mar. 17th and came as many of SKN’s nationals are studying in Cuba.
On Monday Mar. 16th, Cuba’s national electric grid collapsed, plunging around 10 million people into darkness. The latest breakdown has been tied to a wider energy squeeze that intensified after the US cut off Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba and threatened tariffs on any country that sells oil to the island.
Moreover, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Cuba early Tuesday, adding to crisis.
On Wednesday Mar. 18th, aljazeera.com reported that Cuba reconnected its power grid and brought online its largest oil-fired power plant, putting an end to a nationwide blackout that lasted more than 29 hours. But officials said power shortages may continue because not enough electricity is being generated.
