St. Kitts and Nevis Celebrates International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

St. Kitts and Nevis joins the rest of the world in recognizing International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR).

IDDR Day was started in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.

Held every October 13th, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face. That is according to un.org.

In celebration of the day, the St. Kitts National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is having radio giveaways on Thursday, October 13th, open to the general public and a Karaoke competition on October 14th in commemoration of the day.

Meanwhile the VONNEWSLINE spoke with Senior Communications Officer at the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), Mr. Jacob Ngumba, who gave this information on activities surrounding Disaster Risk Reduction, on Nevis.

He further explained what the NDMD is doing as part improving Disaster Risk Reduction this year:
