On April 1st, 2026, the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis formalized a landmark partnership with Special Olympics St. Kitts and Nevis by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement commits the Federation to the Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion Partnership for the period 2026–2028.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Development, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, signed on behalf of the government, while National Director Ivor Blake represented the local Special Olympics body.
As part of the three-year initiative, the government will invest $105,000 to expand the Unified Champion Schools programme. This effort will extend to 18 schools, train 80 teachers, and engage over 1,000 students, including 150 with intellectual disabilities, promoting inclusive education through sport and collaboration.
The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program promotes social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities. The program was previously piloted at Cotton-Thomas Comprehensive School and two primary schools, where students of all abilities played side-by-side on integrated teams, promoting equality and reducing discrimination.
It builds on ongoing national efforts to enhance accessibility and improve opportunities for persons with disabilities.
