St. Kitts and Nevis Researchers Publish International Study on Nutrition and Chronic Disease
The Ministry of Health in St. Kitts and Nevis proudly announced the publication of a new research paper in the international journal Frontiers in Nutrition. Titled “The Metabolic Chronic Disease Prevention Program in Saint Kitts and Nevis: A Dietary Recall Study”, the paper was co-authored by Dr. Hazel Laws, Dr. Sheneil Isles, and Latoya Matthew-Duncan, in partnership with TaiwanICDF Project Manager, William Chen and Taipei Veterans General Hospital. It was published on August 8, 2025.
The study, conducted under the Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Metabolic Chronic Diseases, reveals key health concerns. Findings show that more than half of adults reported no physical activity in the past week, while the median Body Mass Index (BMI) was 28, which is classified as overweight. Diets were also found to be low in fiber, vitamin A, calcium, and vitamin D, though intake of vitamins B and C met recommendations.
These results highlight the importance of healthy eating, regular exercise, and stronger community awareness in preventing chronic diseases. The Ministry extended its sincere thanks to TaiwanICDF for its continued support in strengthening public health programs in St. Kitts and Nevis. The full publication can be found on the website https://www.frontiersin.org.
