Three nationals from St. Kitts and Nevis are participating in the Caribbean’s first International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Postgraduate Educational Course on Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources through a partnership between the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) and the Nevis Island Administration’s Ministry of Education.

Representing the Federation are a SKNBS chemist involved in radiation inspections and two science teachers from Charlestown Secondary School. Their participation aims to strengthen national expertise in radiation safety across the regulatory and education sectors.

The regional programme, which runs from March 30 to September 25, 2026, combines virtual learning with in-person training in Kingston, Jamaica. It brings together 12 participants from six Caribbean countries to study radiation protection, regulatory frameworks, emergency preparedness, and the safe use of radiation sources.

SKNBS Director Stuart LaPlace said the initiative reflects the Federation’s commitment to enhancing radiation safety while equipping educators to inspire future generations. The training is expected to strengthen national oversight, improve science education, and expand the region’s network of radiation safety professionals.
