St. Kitts and Nevis to participate in the Caribe Wave Tsunami Drill this Thursday

The entire month of March is dubbed Tsunami Awareness Month, which is a part of the Nevis Disaster Management Department’s (NDMD), Multiple Hazard Campaign aimed at educating communities on how to be prepared for natural disasters.

In light of this, on Thursday, March 20th, 2025 beginning at 11:00 a.m., schools, businesses and other groups, located in tsunami hazard zones on Nevis, will participate in the 14th edition of a regional tsunami drill called: “Caribe Wave 2025”.

It will simulate an 8.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone located near the islands of Hispaniola and Jamaica. The purpose is to test the emergency protocols of schools, businesses and other institutions as well as emergency systems and procedures of Caribbean communities to ensure that they are tsunami ready. Overall, it seeks to improve the Tsunami Warning Systems (TWS) of the Caribbean and its adjacent regions.

During the Tsunami Drill, persons should evacuate to the nearest Tsunami Safe Zone, after being warned by officials. Safe zones are located at Bucko Park, the CPS Play field, Jessup’s Play field, Long Point Hill, V.O.J.N Play field, and Zone 1 Auto Parts. At the safe zones, persons will participate in a roll call to identify the number of persons rescued. Persons will be allowed to leave the safe zones only when an “Official All Clear” is given.
