St Kitts Department of Agriculture Promotes Eco Friendly Farming Solutions at Field Seminar
The Department of Agriculture St. Kitts and the Caribbean Chemicals Ltd. hosted an impactful field seminar to promote sustainable agriculture which encouraged local farmers in exploring innovative and environmentally conscious alternative to conventional farming practices.
Agronomists from Caribbean Chemicals gave an in-depth technical guidance with introduction of Seranade, Organeem, Cyclops and Aramite, acronym (SOCA) which is a new line of biologically based environmentally friendly agricultural products.
The production of SOCA has advantages as it pertains to viruses affecting crops. Dr. Kennedy Paul mentioned that it has a great benefit in controlling pests, such as weevil and worms, which may affect sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages and more. Product Development Agronomist – Jesse Jarvis also added that the use of SOCA is environmentally friendly and it leaves no chemical residues on produce, allowing for cleaner, safer food unlike conventional chemical pesticides.
Furthermore, Head of the Crops Program, Ian Chapman explained that this initiative would be a step in the right direction and would allow a shift from these harsh chemicals which is toxic for humans and the environment. The seminar also provided the farmers with a scheduled guide in pest management strategies throughout the crop cycles – from planting to harvesting.
