Stakeholders Gather to Evaluate Impact of Single-Use Plastic Ban in St. Kitts
The St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development, hosted a pivotal workshop titled “Towards a Zero Plastic St. Mary’s Biosphere Reserve” on September 10, 2025, at Windsor University Conference Room, Cayon.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders to assess the impact of the 2025 Plastic Waste Reduction Bill on the St. Mary’s Biosphere Reserve as well as the wider nation and to strategize a path toward eliminating single-use plastics. H.E. Nerys Dockery, Secretary General of UNESCO NATCOM, emphasized the urgency of addressing plastic pollution to protect the nation’s UNESCO-designated reserve.
Special Advisor Mrs. Sharon Rattan, representing Minister of Environment, Dr. Joyelle Clarke, stressed the importance of environmental stewardship and resilience building.
Presentations were from local ministries, regional experts, and international guests, including Professor Miguel Clüsener-Godt highlighted global best practices and local challenges.
Community members, activists, and entrepreneurs also shared their experiences with the phased plastic ban, emphasizing the need for more public engagement and incentives.
