“What Will Saint Kitts and Nevis Look Like by 2045?”

That question set the tone for Episode 2 of Conversations Reflections and the Way Forward. It is an Independence Discussion series that aims to reflect on the nation’s progress while encouraging discussions about its future direction and the decisions needed to build a sustainable, prosperous society.

A major concern was the topic of declining birth rates and its connection to the cost of living. Panelist, Melicia Henry, an Economist, shared that rising childcare and household costs are part of the equation, but argues the decision goes beyond affordability:

The declining birth rate could have significant consequences for the future economy. With fewer people entering the workforce, St. Kitts and Nevis could face labour shortages and lower productivity, which would make migration an increasingly important source for workers.

The discussion highlighted that the future of St. Kitts and Nevis depends on addressing the high cost of living and the rising cost of raising children. Improving education through AI, reducing energy and healthcare costs, creating affordable housing, and increasing economic opportunities could make it easier for young people to start families. These changes, combined with better wages and stronger social and economic policies, could support population growth and a higher quality of life by 2045.
