Trinidad and Tobago adopt crime prevention tactics implemented by SKN Prime Minister
The crime prevention vision promoted by St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Terrance Drew has been adopted by Trinidad and Tobago, specifically dealing with crime from a public health perspective, as T&T declared a State of Emergency.
T&T’s Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and Acting Attorney General Stuart Young, highlighted the need for better tools for law enforcement to protect citizens and recognized the importance of public engagement in addressing crime’s root causes.
Young emphasized that policing now has enhanced powers under emergency regulations. Prime Minister Drew advocates for treating crime as a public health issue, focusing on social factors like poverty, unemployment, mental health, and education.
He insists that solving crime requires a united effort from governments and communities, not just law enforcement. This public health approach was discussed at the recent CONSLE summit, where PM Drew urged evidence-based strategies like community policing, mental health support, youth education, and regional data-sharing to tackle cross-border crime.
St. Kitts and Nevis has seen success with shrinking crime rates through programs under Drew’s leadership, serving as a model for others.
The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis commends Trinidad and Tobago for this commitment.
