Each year since 2007, the countries of the United Nations recognizes World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) on April 2nd. Autismspeaks.org describes Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.
This year’s theme is “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
St. Kitts and Nevis’ Federal Ministry of Social Development stated that, “This theme calls for greater inclusivity and accessibility for persons with brain differences, including autism, ensuring an equitable world for everyone.”
Additionally, St. Kitts’ Department of Youth Empowerment, urges individuals to “celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and perspectives of individuals with autism. Let us embrace inclusivity, foster understanding, and create a world where everyone, regardless of their differences, has the opportunity to thrive.”
