World Environment Day observed in SKN

On June 5th 2025, nations of the world celebrated World Environment Day under the theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally”.

 

St. Kitts’ Department of Environment encourages everyone to do their part in fighting plastic pollution as the federation continues its progress towards becoming a Sustainable Island State by the year 2040.

 

 They encourage everyone to educate their friends and family on reducing plastic use, separate your waste & use recycling bins as well as ditching single-use plastics for sustainable alternatives.

 

Further, the department is celebrating its annual Environment Month under the theme “Empowering Change for a Sustainable Future”. Environment officer, Mr. Sherverne Gardiner shared with VON Newsline that apart from team development and public education, the month is to show that a sustainably and environmentally conscious mind is something that can be fun and not burdensome.

Meantime, Nevis’ Recycling Project – ICDF in collaboration with the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has shipped one 40ft container to the Republic of China (Taiwan) with 42 tightly compacted bales of plastic bottles.  According to Joyce Chang, ICDF the plastic bottles will be transformed into t-shirts and tote bags.
