World Ocean Day Observed in St. Kitts and Nevis

On June 8th, 2025, St. Kitts and Nevis joined the world in celebrating World Ocean Day, under the theme “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.”

The day aims to raise awareness about oceans and their importance in supporting life, livelihoods, and planetary health.

“For St. Kitts and Nevis, the ocean isn’t just a beautiful backdrop it’s the heartbeat of our tourism industry, a vital source of food and a pillar of our culture,” stated the Department of Environment St. Kitts.

They continued that with the growing threats of climate change, pollution, and overfishing, protecting our oceans isn’t just an option but a necessity.

As the world’s nations unite to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030, individuals are encouraged to do their part by reducing plastic use, supporting sustainably sourced seafood, participating in beach cleanups and pushing for stronger ocean policies.

Federal Minister of Environment, Dr. Joyelle Clarke, encourages all to do what is necessary “in our respective communities to ensure that we sustain the oceans that sustain us.”
