World Suicide Prevention Day Observed on Nevis

On, September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day is recognized a global day to remind us that every life matters and suicide is preventable.

This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages open conversation, empathy and support. The World Health Organization notes that over 700,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide, highlighting that mental health is a global priority.

Locally, the message is clear: simple acts can save lives. Check in with someone who’s been quiet or withdrawn, ask directly about suicidal thoughts and listen without judgment. Sharing support resources or helplines can also make a difference.

On Nevis, help is available through the Alexandra Hospital Mental Health Unit at 869 469 5473, or in St Kitts at 869 467 1502.

Preventing suicide is not just about moments of crisis, it’s about fostering connection, understanding, and compassion every day. Talking openly, showing care and staying connected can change lives. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Help is available and you are not alone.
