World Tsunami Day celebrated on November 5th 2024

November 5th 2024 was World Tsunami Day. The annual observance is in commemoration of the significant 20 years anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

This year’s theme: “Empowering the next generation with the lessons of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami – 20 years on” highlights the importance of disaster education for younger generations.

National Disaster Coordinator at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Livingston Pemberton, gave his statement on the radio show “Danger to Safety”:

Natural signs that could indicate the approach of a tsunami are an earthquake that lasts 20 seconds or more, or one that knocks you off your feet, a rapid unusual rise or fall in the water level or a loud roar from the ocean. If one observes one or more of these signs they must seek higher ground immediately.
