“Your responsible for your own sexual health” stated Nadine Carty-Caines – HIV/AIDS Prevention Coordinator
As St. Kitts and Nevis joins the rest of the globe in pursuing sustainability, one target of sustainable development goal, focuses on eliminating HIV/AIDS by the year 2030.
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can be transmitted through body fluids. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
Nadine Carty-Caines, HIV/AIDS Prevention Coordinator at the Nevis Health Promotion Unit stated, “Educate yourself on what the virus is, how it is transmitted and the ways you can protect yourself. It’s important to get tested, you are responsible for your own sexual health.”
Some prevention or protection tips are, practicing monogamy, that is only having one sexual partner, regular condom use, and a preventative medicine that protects a virus free individual. Additionally, an HIV positive individual can prevent transmission by seeking treatment, and achieving viral suppression, that is where the amount of HIV present in the blood is so low, it is not likely transmitted.
Carty also stated “Our society is extremely conservative about educating our young people about sex and that could be at our detriment” and emphasized the importance of not making it “taboo”, and educating them as “Our young people are extremely at risk”.
Meantime, the VON Newsline obtained local HIV statistics from the unit. It showed that for the period of 1983 to 2023, there was a total of 87 HIV/AIDS cases while in 2024 there were 3 additional cases, consisting of 2 males and 1 female.
