St. Kitts and Nevis celebrates National Heroes Day

St. Kitts and Nevis celebrated its National Heroes Day on Friday, September 16th, 2022. 

 

Each year, the day is observed in recognizing the contributions of persons who played a huge role in the federation. 

 

To date, there are a total of five (5) National Heroes who are honoured throughout the day.  They are: the right Excellent Sir Simeon Daniel who was the 1st Premier of Nevis, Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds – KCMG who served as SKN’s 1st Prime Minister from 1983 to 1995, Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw was the 1st Premier of Saint Kitts and Nevis and served as a Chief Minister, legislator and Labour activist, Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell was SKN’s 2nd Premier and Sir Joseph Nathaniel France – KCMG, CBE who was a politician and a trade union leader. 

 

Of the five, Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds – KCMG remains the only living National Hero. 

 

National Heroes Day has been recognized annually since 1998 as the Federal Parliament approved the National Honours Act that year, forming three classes of awards, they are: The Medal of Honour, Star of Merit and the Order of National Hero. 

 

The day is also celebrated as a public holiday. The next upcoming holiday for St. Kitts and Nevis is today known as Independence Day celebrated each year on September 19th
