St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew was featured in an interview with BBC’s Ms. Celestina Olulode, on his view on reparations for Saint Kitts and Nevis and the possibility of becoming a republic. PM Drew said he wants to give people a say, as to who the head of state should be.
Attorney General, the Hon. Garth Wilkin, announced in September 2022, that his chambers, were “formulating plans” for SKN to become a Republic. A Republic is a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
As it relates to slavery, Buckingham Palace has said the King takes it “profoundly seriously”. The Palace also announced last month, it was co-operating with an independent study into the relationship between the British monarchy and the transatlantic slave trade, when millions of African men, women and children were shipped to the Americas for use as slaves from the 16th to 19th Centuries.
Though reparations are welcomed, PM Drew said an apology from the monarchy for its links to the slave trade, is also fitting.
