Can St. Kitts & Nevis, in particular, expect any tremors or aftershocks, following recent spate of Earthquakes in the region?

That’s a question the VONNEWSLINE posed to the Nevis Disaster Management Department’s (NDMD) Director, Mr. Brian Dyer.

This comes following the recent quake occurrences in the Caribbean.

Between Christmas Eve (Tuesday, December 24^th, 2019) and Boxing Day (Thursday, December 26th, 2019), four earthquakes were recorded, jolting the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Lucia. 

In addition, Puerto Rico has recorded a number of quakes since Tuesday, December 28^th, 2019.

Moreover, a 5.8-magnitude quake hit the U.S. territory early on Monday, January 6th, 2020 which caused power outages and severely cracking homes.

Earthquakes also have the potential to generate a Tsunami (or Tidal Wave). A Tsunami is a long high sea wave caused by a disturbance. Mr. Dyer gave this advice to general public.

The VONNEWSLINE has also learnt that another quake, this time a 6.5 magnitude was recorded (this morning) Tuesday, January 7th, 2020 in Puerto Rico killing at least one person in the largest in a series of quakes that have struck the U.S. territory in recent days.
