SKN advocates for the British Virgin Islands Right to Self Determination
The federation of St. Kitts and Nevis were a part of a Special Decolonization Session that was held by the United Nations from June 9th to 20th, 2025,
St. Kitts and Nevis was represented by Her Excellency, Dr. Mutryce Williams, and Special Committee on Decolonization Expert, Mrs. Lecia Phipps who advocated for the right of self-determination on behalf of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and also emphasized the importance of decolonization.
Moreover, the pair met with the BVI’s Premier, Dr. Natalio Wheatley, and Special Envoy, Benito Wheatley. Strategies were discussed to improve cooperation in national security, trade, tourism, and disaster risk management as well as create opportunities for people to people diplomacy such as cultural exchanges.
Further, Saint Kitts and Nevis is a part of the C-24, a special committee of 29 members dedicated to examining the application of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and to make suggestions and recommendations on the progress and extent of the implementation of the Declaration.
